Division Series Game 1 Victory for Van Poppel and Seattle
The Seattle Pilots started the Division Series in style today, downing the visiting Detroit Tigers at Kingdome by a score of 5-1 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Pilots right-hander Todd Van Poppel was named player of the game after he threw 8 innings allowing 1 run.

Van Poppel, the Seattle right-hander, went 8.2 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 8 hits. He collected 12 strikeouts.

"If you pitch well, you give yourself some opportunities," said Seattle manager Robert O'Neill.

The next game is scheduled for tomorrow at Kingdome. The scheduled starters for the game are Frank Viola for Detroit and Wally Whitehurst for Seattle.
